Share 2,000 TRY – full well 195,000 TRY
Access to clean water is decisive for school attendance, especially for girls: a child who carries water for two or three hours a day has no time for lessons. Through the Water Wells and Infrastructure programme we open permanent water sources in the Sahel region and in villages of Eastern Anatolia where water is hard to reach.
What does a well project include?
- A geological survey and 60-100 metres of drilling
- A solar-powered or hand pump and a covered reinforced concrete platform
- Water quality analysis and chlorination
- A five-person water users' committee chosen from villagers, with maintenance training
- An annual maintenance visit for 5 years after opening
Cost and share model
A full well costs about 195,000 TRY and serves an average of 600 people. So small donors can take part we offer a 2,000 TRY share model; one share is roughly 1% of a well. Drilling starts when the target amount is reached, and a report with GPS coordinates and photographs is sent to donors on completion.
So far we have brought clean water to about 57,000 people in 96 villages. Local teachers and village headmen attend each opening and the whole process is documented in a written record.
